They just consist of at least two characters, but they work their wonders in different ways.
Like for instance, consider this simple statement:
Weii jahat la kauu....
..and..
Weii jahat la kau. =p
See the difference? The second one is a lot more playful, friendlier and gives laughter.
Smileys are cool coz it gives out emotions. It gets the emotions factor across in a cold rigid text message.
So you can 'emotionalize' your message whether you are angry, sad, playful, or laughing.
But I think the bigger picture here is emotions.
Whether people get what you mean or not is how you show your emotions. (Not your emotionality)
People get that you are happy when you smile. And no words are necessary.
People get it when you are pissed, by wearing that frown. Emotions are daunted on to us from the day we were born. We cry when we are hurt. We laugh when we are happy.
So, back to smileys. Use it wisely. Dont overuse it. And don't waste it. It can save your future.
